5.0 out of 5 stars Clearly stands out on top, March 10, 2012
I was looking for a video editor that is easy to use. I wanted one that if I stopped using it for six months I could easily go back to it and start editing without a big learning curve. I wanted the software interface to be uncluttered, and the software had to be stable. I wanted one that would do all the basics well but had a little room to learn and grow.

After trying a number of video editors using the 30 day free trials, Corel VideoStudio X5 stood out among them all. First of all, the software is nicely layed out. It has the usual three sections for importing video, editing video and exporting video or burning to a DVD. Each section is mostly straight forward, however I kept the manual open on my desktop and looked up a few things here and there as I was editing.

I was able to take about an hour of AVCHD video (as five separate clips), trim them, adjusted their quality, put them in sequence with transitions into the timeline, as well as a good title... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Downgraded from 3 for customer support, April 19, 2012

Follow-up:

The comments further down, for 3 stars, indicate that customer support is willing but weak. I'm now taking a star away because of my latest support experience.

In the continuing effort to get all of the effects included with the package to work on my machine (more than I originally thought), I've been going back and forth with email support. It's clear that their Level One people are following a script pretty much unrelated to the reported problem. But the latest interaction included a full set of instructions requiring me to manually uninstall the product - INCLUDING MANUALLY EDITING ABOUT 16 ITEMS IN THE WINDOWS REGISTRY.That is a suggestion bordering on insanity, even for a programmer - which I am. It's courting absolute disaster for your computer and its installed programs.

When I complained about this, their response was to ask me if my problem was solved. Eventually, they closed out the problem rather than escalate the issue to... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars For users with VideoStudio Pro X3, X4, looking to upgrade, March 16, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I began using VideoStudio Pro X3 for my video editing needs and it served its purpose well. I picked up X4 when it was on sale and it improved stability but didn't fix some annoyances I had like the VideoStudio window not being re-sizable and stuck at full-screen, or not being able to edit MP4s (specifically from my HDPVR - editing other MP4s from my camera or youtube works as intended). I was pretty excited to see that X5 included the ability to re-size the program window and that feature has really made my life simpler when I'm working in the program, but the MP4 problem has yet to be sufficiently addressed. The new desktop capture feature, which also seemed promising is instead a disappointment, as it's restricted to outputting only WMV files as far as I can tell.

As a preexisting VideoStudio Pro user, I'm really hesitant to give X5 more than 3 stars, but the new window re-size ability makes preparing to edit not the chore that it once was. I had to ready various... Read more
