5.0 out of 5 stars The One!, March 2, 2012

This NAS is the one! I purchased the 212J model first to save some money, and I thought I had the whole nine yards, but this DS212 is in another class. You can check my 212J review in Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS212j (White). Although I don't see any increase in the average transfer speed of DS212--I still get about 30MB/sec with one enterprise HDD--this one is by far a better NAS compared to the "J" model. From the moment you open the box you realize everything about this model is different and more professional. If you are considering all the 212 series' models, and you are serious about these stuffs, just get this one over the "J" model.

I could easily use the hard drive configured with 212J in DS212. It just formatted the DSM partition and was ready to go. All my previous information... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The best NAS, December 3, 2011

I've gone though a few NAS devices over the years, until I discovered Synology through an audiophile forum (computeraudiophile com). I use it primarily as a DLNA /Upnp music server for my PS Audio Dac/bridge & backup server (TimeMachine for Macs). It excels in both areas, but I also like the customization options and apps that can be added to this. My first DS211j was a bit underpowered, so I upgraded to the DS212 this year. No regrets so far. The unit is quiet and fast. The browser interface is one of the best NAS interfaces I've seen (I have to add that I'm in the IT biz, so maybe noobs will find it a bit confusing at first).

All in all a 5 star unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for the home or home office, November 24, 2011

Let's start with the negative side, before I go over the raving review!
The CD in the box was blank! Booh! Anyway, no big deal since all the software is on download on the web site, and since you want to get the latest version, you'd better do that anyway.

So now, this thing is awesome! Just look up the features and you'll see it's much more than a standard NAS: it's really a small server with all sorts of features. If you need a box to backup your data, share files in the house or small office, it's a good choice, but it can do a lot more: access from the outside, from mobile devices, with secure connections, including VPN server. It doubles as a FTP, Web and database server so you can run your own website from this box. It handle dynamic DNS, so no need for a static IP. It's got iTune server, Media Server, and lots of other things to share audio, video, and stream from any device on a local network or from outside.
Got this plugged with a popcorn hour box and it... Read more
